Practical Information
Getting Around
Taxis and ride-sharing apps are the most convenient options for tourists in Addis Ababa. Agree on fares before departing or use metered taxis. For a full weekend, consider hiring a driver for the day (around $40-60), which provides flexibility and local knowledge. Blue minibus taxis are very cheap but can be confusing for first-time visitors. Walking is pleasant in specific neighborhoods but distances between attractions are significant. The new light rail system connects some areas but doesn't reach all tourist sites.
Book Ahead
Unity Park tickets should be booked online 2-3 days ahead. Other museums accept walk-ins but arrive early. Book accommodation in advance, especially during Ethiopian New Year (September) and Christmas (January 7).
Packing Essentials
Modest clothing for religious sites, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection (high altitude means strong sun), light jacket for cool evenings, hand sanitizer, small bills in Ethiopian Birr for entrance fees and tips
Total Budget
$125-175 for 2 days (excluding accommodation and international flights)
