Arba Minch sits between Ethiopia's two largest lakes—Lakes Chamo and Abaya—in a position that genuinely impresses even seasoned travelers. The name means "forty springs" in Amharic, though you'll find countless natural springs bubbling throughout the area. This is southern Ethiopia's Rift Valley at its most dramatic. The town splits into two areas. Sikela perches on the ridge with better views and cooler temperatures, while Shecha hugs the lakeshore where most action happens. Nechisar National Park spreads between the lakes like a natural bridge, creating a gateway to some of Ethiopia's most real feels.
